Why Is My Water Heater Leaking?

A leaking water heater can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. It can lead to higher utility bills and cause significant water damage to your home. Join the Centerville Plumbing & Drain professionals today as we explore why your water heater might be leaking and what you can do about it.

Before we start: Remember to always turn off the unit before troubleshooting. Your safety is important!

Common Cause Number 1: A Loose Cold or Hot Water Inlet and Outlet Connection

A common cause of water heater leaks is a loose connection on the cold or hot water inlet and outlet pipes. These connections can loosen over time due to temperature changes and regular use. When this happens, water can seep out, appearing as a small puddle around the heater’s base or a slow drip from the pipes.

To see if this is the cause, check the connections at the top of the water heater. If you notice any water around these spots, the connections might be the issue. Tighten them with a wrench, but be careful not to overtighten, as that could cause more damage.

Common Cause Number 2: A Malfunctioning Pressure Relief Valve

A leaking water heater can also be caused by a malfunctioning pressure relief valve. This valve releases excess pressure inside the tank. If it fails, water may leak out. A faulty pressure relief valve is serious because it means the tank might have too much pressure, which could lead to a dangerous burst.

To check if the valve is the problem, lift its lever slightly. If water comes out, the valve is working. If it keeps leaking after you release the lever, you might need to replace the valve.

Common Cause Number 3: A Faulty or Loose Temperature & Pressure Relief Valve

Like the pressure relief valve, the temperature and pressure (T&P) relief valve can also cause water heater leaks. This valve controls the water heater’s temperature and pressure. If it’s faulty or loose, it can lead to leaks. A leaking T&P valve may indicate that the water temperature is too high or that the pressure inside the tank is too great. Both situations are dangerous and need immediate attention.

If you think the T&P valve is the issue, look for water around it. If it’s wet, you may need to replace it.

Common Cause Number 4: A Leaking Inlet Valve

The inlet valve controls the flow of cold water into the water heater and can often cause leaks. If this valve is damaged or not sealed properly, water can escape and pool around the heater’s base. You might see a steady drip or a small stream of water coming from the valve area.

To fix this issue, check the inlet valve for damage or wear. You may need to tighten or replace it.

When to Call a Professional Plumber:

If you’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps and your water heater is still leaking, it’s time to call a professional plumber. Some problems are too complex or dangerous for DIY repairs. A professional can diagnose the issue and provide a lasting solution, which might include replacing parts, fixing internal tank issues, or recommending a new water heater.

A leaking water heater can cause stress and damage if not fixed promptly. By knowing the common causes and following troubleshooting steps, you can often resolve issues yourself. If the problem continues, don’t hesitate to call us. Keeping your water heater in good working order will prevent bigger issues later. Being proactive is key!
