Why Isn’t My Toilet Flushing?

Unfortunately, a toilet that isn’t flushing can be very frustrating, and the first thing you think to do is call the plumber. Luckily, there is an easy way to fix it most of the time, and you probably won’t need your local plumber to help. Our expert team of plumbing professionals at Centerville Plumbing & Drain has provided insight into why your toilet may not be flushing and how to repair it.

Does The Lift Chain On Your Toilet Have Too Much Slack?

If you’re feeling little to no resistance on your toilet’s lift chain when pushing down, the chain has probably moved from its hook. If this is occurring in your toilet, luckily, it is an easy fix! Lift chains should have about half an inch of slack, so trim it if it is too long. After cutting the chain to the preferred length, place it back on the hook; it is good as new!

Is Your Toilet Backed Up?

One of the most common reasons toilets won’t flush is that it is backed up. Backups and clogs can happen anytime and often, especially if you flush excessive amounts of toilet paper or flush items down the toilet that shouldn’t be flushed, like paper towels and feminine hygiene products. Backed-up toilets are easy to diagnose. If you flush your toilet and you notice the only thing that happens is the levels of water rising, more than likely, your toilet is backed up. The best way to approach this is to use your plunger to unclog, or a toilet brush to clean it out.

Are the Water Levels in Your Toilet Bowl Low?

For your toilet to correctly flush, it must empty at least 80% of its tank’s total capacity to succeed. However, your toilet’s tank may not correctly flush if it fills with little to no water. If the water volume isn’t increasing naturally, you may need to look at your fill valve and overflow tube. First, lift your toilet’s tank lid and examine your plumbing equipment. If you see any cracks on your overflow tube or any damage to your fill valve, you need to get in touch with your local plumbing contractor to repair the issue before it becomes a bigger problem.
